The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.
The Alghero accommodation on Booking.com includes 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.
Really liked Alghero . The quaint old narrow streets in the town . The long prom walk . The port. The old buildings. People very friendly apart from the guy in the tourist office who was arrogant and rude. We could not get into some of the Churches as there was work going on.

Alghero is a lovely place to visit with its historical old town of a maze of pretty cobbled streets consisting of multiple restaurants, shops and wine bars. Lovely marina where you can take boat trips from. Lots of nice restaurants outside of the old town, would recommend Rafel restaurant and bar situated on the beach for that special dining experience.

Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations.
Fabulous place which exceeded our expectations. Safe, plenty to do and lots of good places to eat. I would recommend hiring a car. We did from 'Casual Van'. It was great to see the surrounding coast. Really stunning scenery. Would recommend Regina Margherita and La Bottega for meals and Jo'pier. We got to and from the airport by taxi which we pre booked.

Lovely, charming, walkable little city that makes you feel like you're on holiday but it doesn't feel like a tourist toytown. We were there in mid October so it may well be much busier in the summer, but it was not at all crowded and was one of loveliest holidays we've had. Good food, everything is walkable, excellent city and a boat trip to the grottos.

Litter appalling. Waste bins not emptied and rubbish out on streets for days. Foothpaths appalling and dangerous especially for older people.
Vsited Maria Pia beach most days by bus. AF bus service quick but did not seem to stick to a timetable especially on Sundays.
Great places for eating. Hotel staff inHot la Magherita were fantastic and recommended many places to eat and very helpful with queries we had.

The beaches were amazing and there was plenty of them within a short distance from our accommodation, Bombarde beach was particularly beautiful, no a walk , but rent a bike for an easy cycle from Alghero.
We landed and came straight to the hotel so the location was great because we could throw our things into the room and head straight out onto the beach. The rooms are lovely - white with blue accents which is beautiful next to the red tile stones.
The beach is literally on your front doorstep which I loved because you can dip between staying in your room, sunbathing on the beach or going in the sea whenever you like. Feels really nice and secluded with the private beach and sunbeds.
Great place to start the holiday!
What a way to start off our first trip to Sardinia. Chloe & Stefano were really helpful in giving us tips on the best places to visit and we instantly felt at home here such a peaceful & beautiful location the sunset from the terrace was amazing and breakfast was lovely plenty of choice would definitely recommend a visit here, you would need a car if you are staying here as it is just outside of the town less than 10 minute drive to the beautiful old town of Alghero. We definitely hope to return here one day.
Nice room. Clean, comfortable, quiet. The garden view was lovely. Elevator available. The Sardinian artwork in the room and in the restaurant was most interesting and enjoyable. The gardens were very pretty. Breakfast was typical Italian, fresh and tasty. Excellent coffee. We ate at the restaurant one night and the food was excellent as was the top notch service. A lot of parking on the grounds. Ariana was a gracious hostess. If you’re a birdwatcher, I saw or heard 10 different species around the garden.
Monica and her family welcomed us at the flat. The communication was very easy and quick before and during our stay for two nights in Alghero. The flat is in the middle of the old town and perfect to enjoy visiting the city as well as discover the restaurants and little streets.
Parking was not possible directly at the flat, but we were able to find also free parking options in a 10 min walking distance. The flat is properly equipped with everything you need. We can definitely recommend staying here.
Location, location!! The beach is right across the street which is awesome! The hotel is also right next to a pharmacy, a gelato shop and many restaurants. Old town Alghero is about a 20 minute walk down the road or a quick bus ride. We loved the AC that ran nice and cold which was lovely when you walk in the door. Room was clean and well equipped and the front desk was very friendly with lots of great tips!
A jewel outside of Alghero.
If you’re looking for a quiet and familiar place with short distance to city and beach you are on the right place here!
The highlight is definitely the dinner which takes place outside under a roof. Annalisa, Sylvia and their mum will prepare typical and delicious menu for you with an authentic taste of Sardinia.
Thank you for having us and being also so cute to our baby Lenni <3
The BEST place to stay in Alghero!
Lovely owner everything was perfect from the early communications to the check in and check out.
Room has a balcony, very clean with new towels.
Add to that an amazing breakfast with homemade cake and free service for coffee, cappuccino, yogurt and fruits.
I highly recommend this place and will definitely come back whenever I visit Alghero.
Stefania checked us in when we arrived around 4pm. She was lovely and welcoming. Since it was our first time in Sardinia, she took her time to suggest things to do and places to eat. Though it was only 1 night , we enjoyed our stay and much had to do with her inviting welcome to Alghero and to Sardinia. The light breakfast offered , complimentary, was a nice touch .
The apartment was very spacious and welcoming. The decor gave you a feel that were right on the beach even though you were a block away. The host had more than enough supplies to get you through the first couple of nights which is very thoughtful, as some properties barely give you the minimum. I would definitely recommend this property if staying in Alghero.
absolutely the best choice that cannot be regretted.
Spacious apartment with equipped kitchen.
The perfect location right by the beach, and about 800m from Maria Pia beach, which is the real Sardinia. An incredibly beautiful cenetrum of Aghero city about 1.5km after a beautiful promenade.
Ideal availability from the airport by Alfa (AF), at 1.3€.
Nice hotel for short stay in Alghero. Hotel and rooms are a bit of old fashioned, but clean and properly equipped. Some rooms with the view to the sea, however it's partial view only. Good and relatively reach breakfast when compared to other places in Italy. Parking available. Staff is very helpful.
Nice hotel, in the countryside, next to Alghero. You need a car to get around, 10 min to get to Alghero, 15 min from the airport. Property is well maintained and has big green spaces and bug parking. The room was big and well equipped. The swimming pool was available 24 h, yet it was quiet .
Location just on a first line to the sea and walking distance to Alghero city center. Apartment is not very spacious, but very comfortable. Equipped with everything needed to spend there sardinian holidays. Host Luisa is very welcoming and provided all the needed information and support.
Francesco suggested me the best bar in Alghero. I had wonderful time. Room is clean, big enough even for 2 ppl, supplies 2 sets of towels for 2 nights,a hair dryer & amenities (which was a happy surprise I didn’t expect there would be)..
Just awesome. Grazie mille!
Very cute Sardinian room, brand new and tasteful. I must say that in Alghero it’s hard to find this kind of quality accommodation.
It’s so nice that they’re is a common kitchen zone with available tea/ coffee, dishes and cutlery with a micro wave!
Varied and tasty breakfast. Easy to find a free parking on the street in front of the hotel. Air conditioning worked continuously, which was a great help given the 38+ degrees we had during our stay in Sardinia.
The hotel is right on the beach and the food was very good. Our toddler eat everything without a problem. Also, the stuff made all our requests possible. The view is ok. The room is spacious.
Ana and her father are super nice hosts. Everyday fresh breakfast and Ana can tell you everything about Sardinia! It's a 15 minute nice sea walk to the centre of Alghero.
Lucas is a wonderful host. The Breakfast was by far the best we had out of our 5 different locations in Sardinia. The location is fabulous. Highly recommend!
