From prehistory to the present, the very essence of Plymouth has been inextricably linked to the sea. The Pilgrim Fathers departed from here and named their new Massachusetts settlement after it, and Sir Francis Drake famously finished his game of bowls on The Hoe before combatting the Spanish Armada.
Western Europe’s largest naval base – HMNB Devonport – is in its natural harbour, and in The Barbican fishing boats bob up and down by cobbled streets lined with historic buildings. Jacka Bakery here is the oldest in Britain and there are plenty of galleries, bars and restaurants, though Union Street has the best nightlife.
At one end of the street is the Theatre Royal, and from the other ferries depart to France and Spain, passing the Mount Batten peninsula and offshore rocks that once housed Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, now in Hoe Park next to the Royal Citadel.
Overlooking the park is the Lord Mayor’s residence, once home to Waldorf and Nancy Astor, and other street and building names are reminders of Plymouth’s illustrious connections.
Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium, the City Museum and Art Gallery and Grade II-listed Saltram House. All are easily reached from Booking.com’s Plymouth accommodation, including luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap guest houses and country houses with parking.

Plymouth is a lively and interesting city in a spectacular coastal location. The view from the Hoe looking out over the harbors to the neighboring sea is breathtaking. We stayed in the Barbican area right on the water above the Mayflower Steps at the Admiral McBride pub. The National Aquarium and Mayflower Museum are only steps away plus numerous restaurants, bistros, pubs, and shops. Plus it’s the home of Sir Francis Drake. The Town Centre was an easy walk uphill. Several car hires are within easy walking distance as well if you plan to visit neighboring Cornwall.

The main entrance has two short flights of stairs up to reception and no lift in that part of the building. Difficult for people with heavy luggage etc and the back entrance is confusing for new visitors (ok once you get a feel for the place). A couple of days in Plymouth itself is probably enough but the hotel is conveniently close to both the train station and bus depot making it easy to do day trips to Exeter, Penzance, Torquay, Totnes etc

Very little parking in the centre. Plymouth is quite hilly for those with limited mobility. The little Barbican Theatre is great. Centre can get a bit lairy after Plymouth Argyle have played at home.

Plymouth Hoe is a wonderful place to walk plenty of history.to indulge in. The barbican is a short walk from the Hoe where you will find restaurants and pubs. I would avoid the city centre until after the improvements are finished.
Everything else was lovely, everything was new and fresh. Welcome cocktail was a lovely touch, rooms had everything you could possibly need from a city centre hotel. Great location close to the beautiful Hoe, Barbican and Royal William Yard. I chose to have breakfast in the morning, I have to say that it was the best hotel breakfast I have ever experienced. So much variety, from Cereals, cooked breakfast, cold cheese and meats, fruit and yoghurts, waffles, pastries, coffee and juice. Honestly was exceptional, will most definitely be returning
The whole hotel is being refurbished, inside and out. Our room was pristine, with new carpets, furniture and bathroom.
This is a gorgeous, grand Victorian building with many original features. The dining room has impressive high ceilings and plasterwork.and original sash windows,
Cooked breakfast was by pre-order and included in the price. It was hot, freshly cooked and our specific needs (vegetarian) were catered for.
The staff were pleasant, knowledgeable and friendly.
This hotel is literally a minute's walk from Plymouth Hoe.
Friendly and helpful welcome at reception, and friendly professional service at breakfast. Breakfast was excellent and well-presented. Bed was comfy. Hotel was clean and pleasant. The Welcome Book in the room was comprehensive, informative and gently witty. Plymouth Hoe (offering fine views over Plymouth Sound) was only about 400 yards or so from the hotel. Overall, I was very impressed with the Imperial and recommend it for anyone looking to stay in Plymouth.
I stayed in Ocean Stays for almost 3 months due to work assigment at Derriford Hospital. Barrie, the hotel manager, admin team and housekeepers all have been very accomodating to my needs. The room was very confortable and spacious.

Delux room was great, hotel staff are superb - nothing was too much trouble, a very personal service.
Perfect location for the Plymouth Pavillions which is at the bottom of the car park (£3 per day).
Would not hesitate to stay here again.
Breakfast is great, bar food and restaurant food is superb - we've eaten in both, and they are excellent
Spacious rooms, super clean shared bathrooms and toilets but most importantly every single staff member from day to night team was friendly! The location of the hotel was amazing! Right in the middle of the city centre! If I come back to Plymouth I would 100% stay there again and recommend it to my friends!
Finally visited Plymouth - last time got a car breakdown and had to reschedule the trip, many thanks to the hotel for agreeing on different dates. Everything's good, especially breakfast :) nicely cooked and plenty of choice. Staff is helpful and professional.
Close to the Hoe and therefore middle of Plymouth easy access to all you need.
The hotel was clean, all staff happy and helpful. We enjoyed our breakfast which was a mix between buffet and table service.
Would certainly return and recommend.
The staff at the Invicta were pleasant and helpful. The breakfast provided was a great start to the day and the location of the hotel is fabulous. 10 minute walk into Plymouth city centre. We enjoyed our stay.

The hotel was very comfortable and clean. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend staying at this hotel. The breakfast choice and service was also excellent.
A classic gem. Historic hotel that didn’t try to renovate away all the old style charm. Comfortable, clean, friendly staff. Would definitely stay again & recommended to friends.
