Amazing location, historical site and displays are superbly presented.
This charming guest house provides rooms that offer scenic views of the Guadiana River or of the whitewashed town of Mértola. The Beira Rio has its own boat for tours of the Guadiana River.

Very good staff and service, they were flexible and kind despite my having mixed up my days of reservation. They took care of it immediately. It is a beautiful location and the river view rooms are lovely with a fantastic view. I have been there twice now and will go back again.

Picked ths spot by the Guadiana whilst motorcycling in Spain and Portugal. Mertola is one of the few crossing points. It was quite hard to find in steep little streets but easy safe parking and a lovely view out over the river. It was a very comfy room in a private house

Lovely little house in the old town. Spacious and beautifully decorated and well equipped. Highly recommended.
Perfect area to roam around for a couple of days. Hiking trails. Museums. Restaurants. We drove around the beautiful area. We stayed for a weekend and had plenty of things to do and good restaurants.

Mértola is an ancient town, dating back to at least Roman times, full of interesting history, well worth reading up on by those interested. The castle and old church are open to the public and well worth a visit. It has its own charm, full of restaurants, many with traditional cuisine and really good value. The surrounding countryside is a mix of steppe grasslands, woodland and some fascinating rocky hills and gorges. I have a great interest in wildlife and in this area there are a number of rare birds, such as Great and Little Bustards, which can be seen in the steppe areas, especially early in the mornings. I was lucky to get some photos of the Great Bustard, see below. There are also Spanish Imperial Eagles breeding here, one of the rarest eagles in Europe and the rare Lesser Kestrel can be seen flying around the castle in the town.

Beautiful small city, breathtaking views, friendly people, good fairly priced food. We stayed at Alojamento Oasis in a perfect selfcatering room, with view over the Guadiana river. All for 20 euros per night!

Wonderful to stay for a few days, just park the car and walk the rest of the holiday, you can cycle, canoe, walk by the river, go and have a meal, seat in a cafe and have a drink, very pretty and lots of little traditional details, some beautiful architecture, plenty of shops to buy food and restaurants, go on a boat trip up and down the river, wake up hearing the sheeps bells rambling on the river margin and watch the sunset hearing the shrills of the swallows and relax.

Mértola has always had a serious problem of self-marketing.
Mértola has always had a serious problem of self-marketing. They have a very nice islamic museum (the only in the entire country). Yet is is closed for works, ... in high season.
The castle is closed at precisely the times (lower sun) when it would offer the greatest views on this marvellous town. And there is nothing else so exciting so see there, except the medieval cistern, etc. So. why close it at all, and charge money?
The Mosque is the only surviving one in the entire country, i.e. the Portuguese didn't destroy it so much. So it can easily be recognised as a Mosque. But yet: it is also hardly ever open (it is a church, obviously).
So, you bring all kind of people from everywhere into this magic little city on the edges of Portugal, just in order that they stand all the time facing closed doors. This situation has indeed been worsening. Before, the castle was simply not gated and everybody knew who could let you into the Church-Mosque.
It is so embarrassing.
Jose was a great host, welcoming, friendly, and very helpful.
Breakfast was wonderful, plentiful with a wide selection. The location was perfect for us. Close to a local restaurant and just a short drive into Mertola, with great views of the surrounding countryside from the patio outside the room, west facing perfect for sundowners. For me, the best feature was the wonderful pool and terrace on the upper level. Friendly dogs were an added bonus.
Staff were knowledgable about the town. The history of this remarkable town, which is basically a museum unto itself, is physically incorporated into the hotel building - excavated ancient building ruins are preserved in the basement for visitors to see. Rooms are well- furnished and clean, views of the Guadiana are impressive, including the partial view in one room for which the hotel does not claim a 'river view'.
What an adventure to stay in a medieval “palace” though with modern plumbing and lighting! Mertola has a number of small, very interesting museums with items collected from archeological digs and disused religious facilities — sacred art, Islamic art, a Roman house — along with a fairly intact castle and archeological sites. It is well worth visiting and Mertola Castelo Palace is just steps from all of this.
Hotel is located a approximately 5 miles from Mertola. It is rural with a view of distant mountains and wonderful dogs to play with. We enjoyed the chickens down the hill and sheep grazing in the distance (you could hear the sheep bells). Beautiful pool which we enjoyed greatly as the weather was quite hot. Glorious sunsets. Gracious breakfast. Welcome quiet after spending 5 days in Lisbon and Sintra.
Hotel located in an excellent position close to the castle. Lovely to stay in an historic building. Lounge and outside space available to guests which was nice. Coffee machine available. (charge) Excellent wi-fi. Very good shower. Very helpful and friendly owner, who was happy for us to put our bikes in an adjacent storage room.
This is an extremely beautiful place in Mertola, a very nice city in the natural park of Guidiana River. We stayed with our 4 grown up children, two of them with their partners. There was enough room for all of us, we liked especially the huge terrace of the upper floor. We really can highly recommand.
Charming hotel right across the river from Mértola castle. Perfect location for exploring the area. Easy parking. The room was cute, clean, and comfortable. Walked to a good restaurant. Our room had a view of the castle. We drove and hiked in the area and returned to the hotel each evening.
We liked the location and could walk all over Mertola from the property. The patio was a plus and we could make meals in the kitchen and hang laundry to dry outside. There was a delicious vegetarian restaurant right around the corner!
Good communication allowed me to check in early and change the room. Quiet location off the main street. Walking distance to the castle and the walls.
MERTOLA!!!!*****
I liked it so much that I stayed another night
Absolutely wonderful host, very welcoming and helpful to ensure we had an enjoyable stay
Excellent view of the river and the city of Mertola
Comfortable room, included a small shared kitchenette
Excellent hosts and hospitality. This is a true hidden gem in Mértola. Located off the beaten bath it was absolutely wonderful for our family of four and we will certainly make a return visit.
Restaurant 50 meters distant with typical local food. Very good and nice atmosphere.
Friendly people.
Good neighbourhood
Nice places closeby: Mertola and its castle, nice lake with its beach
Wonderful country inn with amazing views of Mértola. Comfortable, modern, sparkling clean rooms. Friendly staff. Nice, 30-minute walk along and across the river to Mértola historic center.
Beautiful spot in Mertola overlooking the river and castle. We were bikepacking so had to leave early the next day. Gutted we didn't have time to enjoy breakfast on the terrace!
Location in downtown Mértola, river view, peaceful quiet morning, nice views out both windows, cute balcony. We loved jumping in the pool. Hot water in shower. Comfortable bed.
